SENATE BILL 1312:  THE NEXT STEP!

On April 14, several ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter members flew to Sacramento to support SB 1312 during its hearing before the California Senate Business and Professions Committee.  Our Chapter members walked the halls of the Capitol, meeting and delivering information packets to the Senators.  And we achieved a victory, thanks to these appearances and your personal letters to the Senators!  The Senate Business and Professions Committee voted in favor of SB 1312!

But SB 1312 still has a long journey ahead before its ultimate passage into law.  On May 12th a second Senate committee, the Appropriations Committee, will hear SB 1312 in order to determine its financial impact on the State’s budget.  Please be assured that the Bill will not have a negative impact on the State's budget because the fees of becoming a Registered Interior Designer in California will offset the costs incurred by the State in running the interior design program.

SB 1312 needs your continued support every step of the way, so please send out your letters to the Senate Appropriations Committee!

SALLIE TCHANG, UCLA EXTENSION ARC_ID STUDENT, WINS WINTER ’07 QUARTERLY ACCESS DESIGN CHALLENGE!

Sallie earned this honor and a cash prize of $500 by participating in the ACCESS Design Challenge, a quarterly competition sponsored by ASID (national level) where students may participate.  Only one winner per competition is selected by ASID professional members, and our very own UCLA Extension student won it! Says Sallie, “Partly the motivation for me to participate is that I’ve really wanted our school to be recognized as I been following this competition for a while and have not seen an entry from our program.” Sallie’s challenge was to design a display for a historical artifact--such as a piece of ancient Egyptian jewelry—that embraces the history of the piece by utilizing materials that were important to the era in innovative ways. The display is an exhibition on loan and will be prominently featured in the lobby of Chicago’s Sears Tower. Congratulations Sallie!

THANK YOU TO EMERGING GREEN BUILDERS AND TO ARC_ID STUDENT LYNNE LATHAM FOR SPONSORING AND HOSTING THE LEED STUDY GROUP!

This past month, UCLA Extension Arc_Id Students were royally treated to free LEED expertise from Emerging Green Builders (EGB), group of young professionals dedicated to the green building movement.  Arc_Id Student Lynne Latham tirelessly organized the first-ever LEED Study Group, which just wrapped its fifth and last meeting.  A huge thank you to both EGB and Lynne for helping everyone get a better understanding of the LEED approach to building sustainably.

ASID UCLA EXTENSION STUDENT CHAPTER WELCOMES SANTA BARBARA CITY COLLEGE INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS!

Currently, Santa Barbara City College does not have its own ASID Student Chapter.  Our Student Chapter is thrilled to take the interior design students there under our wing.  We look forward to meeting these new members of our Chapter at our upcoming events!

UCLA EXTENSION ARC_ID RECEIVES RE-ACCREDITATION BY THE COUNCIL ON INTERIOR DESIGN ACCREDITATION (CIDA)

CIDA's Accreditation Commission made its decision at its March 13-14, 2008 meeting to grant re-accreditation to UCLA Extension ARC-ID. Thank you and congratulations to all the students and faculty who participated in the accreditation review.  Professional level programs accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation voluntarily place themselves before the scrutiny of the profession to ensure that students receive an education that will serve them not only during their time at school, but also prepare them for future professional growth. Students enrolled in an accredited interior design program can be confident that the program meets the quality standards recognized by the profession.

DESIGN BOOTCAMP LAUNCHES BIG WITH ERGO 101

ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter launched Design Bootcamp with Humanscale’s Ergo 101 on January 18. Sean Kim, the former student chapter president said, “Humanscale has been a huge supporter of our chapter.  They are reaching out to emerging designers to educate and inspire them to design smart, cool and comfortable work environments using ergonomics. We are excited to have Brandi Mayo, the A+D Representative for Humanscale to launch our Design Bootcamp.”

For the professional and emerging designers who prefer to come in to “hit it hard and fast,” Design Bootcamp is the best place to get the latest design information for people on the go.  From the World’s Top Ten Companies that “drive design forward” in ergonomics solutions company to a pioneer in Design Psychology, UCLA Extension ASID Student Chapter is committed to presenting the most innovative speakers in the design industry.

Recognized by I.D. Magazine as one of ten “Best Companies” worldwide “that help push design forward” in their 2004 annual issue.  “At Humanscale, our mission is to design and manufacture products that create a healthier, more comfortable and more productive work environment,” said Mayo.  The emerging and professional designers alike got the inside scoop from the ergonomics giant on how ergonomic and human factor considerations can make or break an office environment.  According to Dan Cannon, the editor of Design at Work, “The typical office worker spends more time sitting in their office chair than they spend anywhere else, with the exception of their own bed.  Unfortunately, for many office workers and their companies, all of that sitting can come with a painful price.”

Brandi Mayo advises that as designers, we can have significant impact by specifying ergonomically designed chairs from the initial design phase rather than after the post-occupancy survey.  The result of employers not being proactive until the problem happens can be costly due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders and loss of productivity.  When Mayo concluded the presentation with “Ergonomic solution is not an accessory but a necessity in the workplace,” we all sat up straight.

CONGRATS TO KIM HOLT AND SYLVIA YOO! THEIR THESIS PROJECTS HAVE BEEN CHOSEN TO REPRESENT UCLA EXTENSION ARC_ID IN THE 2X8: SKIN EXHIBIT @ PDC STARTING MARCH 27 AT WESTWEEK.  2x8 is an annual exhibition sponsored by the AIA/LA, showcasing exemplary student work from architecture and design institutions throughout California. This year's exhibition is entitled SKIN. Each of the participating academic programs selects two projects that exemplify its core vision.  The students’ design work will be judged by a noteworthy panel of architects and designers, who will then announce the winners at the exhibition opening and convene in a forum to discuss the successful work.

"GREEN" IS A FOUR-LETTER WORD

“When Rupert Murdoch and NRDC (National Resource Defense Council) are on the same side, you know something is happening,” said Lance Williams, the Executive Director of USGBC/LA (United States Green Building Council), And, that something is sustainability, and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is providing the most widely accepted guidelines to architecture and design industry.  Firms like Gensler have adopted company wide-sustainability practices and “Green Initiative” at AC Martin are committed to educating designers and architects to become LEED accredited.  As the second leg of an ongoing “Get Green.  Design Green” Initiative championed by UCLA Extension ASID Student Chapter, Williams was a welcome voice to a packed room at UCLA Extension Building on January 25th.

As the featured speaker of the DESIGN BOOTCAMP 2: LEED:  GREEN IS A FOUR-LETTER WORD, Lance Williams addressed how LEED is revolutionizing the architecture and design industries.  Specifically, how the LEED Rating System, Project Certification, Professional Accreditation and LEED Resources are becoming “the standard” to Green and Sustainable Design.

According to Williams, the LEED rating system by USGBC is consensus based, that  it is continually evolving, providing third-party verification. With Green being the new black and sustainability becoming the new business model, have we reached “green fatigue?”  Do we really need LEED?  Williams makes a compelling case. For the first time in history of mankind:

  • The world has reached “peak” oil reserves.
  • More people live in the city than not.
  • The world is experiencing water scarcity.
  • The land traditionally used for food is now being converted into land for growing bio-fuel.

If that doesn’t scare you, there will be 62% increase in world energy consumption by 2030 lead by developing economies of China and India, which also have the largest populations. Williams explained that Sustainability is not just a slogan, “Hug a tree.  Save the World.”  Williams continues by saying that “LEED is asking people to change their mindset - live their lives differently. It is change as radical change. Sustainability is amuch larger issue than driving a Prius and swapping out incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents. Sustainability is a world phenomena that’s is a systematic and analytic approach.”

For students in attendance, the big question was how can they get involved while still in school? Williams advised joining Emerging Green Builders of USGBC.  According to EGB, “EGB members are students and young professionals dedicated to becoming and recruiting the future leaders of the green building movement. EGB groups around the country offer young people the opportunity to get involved in green building locally, gain access to USGBC resources, and participate in local events.”  EGB projects include:

  • The Annual USGBC Natural Talent Design Competition
  • A forum at Greenbuild
  • A job/internship postings for green building
  • Education and university programs
